September Outfits: Dressing for That In-Between Weather

September outfits for the in-between weather: cool mornings, warm afternoons, and a removable layer you can carry once the sun comes out.

September is the month your closet stops making sense. You leave the house at 8 a.m. and want a jacket. By 1 p.m. you're carrying it. These September outfits are built around one idea: a layer you can take off. If you're rethinking the whole closet, start with our guide to transitioning your summer wardrobe to fall. This post is the quick version — eight looks for the crossover.

A rough temperature guide: a cardigan is comfortable from about 58 to 70°F. A trench covers roughly 55 to 68°F. A shearling jacket runs warm — great at 50°F in the morning, too much above about 68°F by midday, so plan to carry it. For more on this, see our notes on light layering for early fall (publishing soon).

The In-Between Layering Rule

The mistake is dressing for the temperature when you walk out the door. In September that number climbs 12 to 18 degrees by early afternoon, so the 8 a.m. reading is the coldest you'll feel all day. Dress for the 2 p.m. high instead — the top, the pants, the shoes — and treat the jacket as a separate decision.

Then pick a layer that solves the morning without fighting the afternoon: something you can tie at your waist, fold into a tote, or leave on the back of a chair. Check the forecast for the spread, not just the high. A 55 to 74°F day needs a real removable layer; a flat 60 to 64°F day means the layer stays on and you can wear the heavier knit outright.

Casual September Outfits for Everyday

A beige trench is the obvious September layer because it handles a 55°F morning and then folds flat into a tote when the afternoon climbs. Underneath, the cream ruched top has sheer mesh shoulders, so it still breathes once the coat comes off, and the grey wide-leg jeans keep the whole thing neutral enough to wear on repeat. See the full outfit here. Wear it for a morning coffee run that turns into errands — the beige Gazelles keep you walkable for a long afternoon on your feet.

This one works for in-between weather because the striped cardigan sits over a white tank, not against bare skin — so when it warms up past 70°F, the cardigan comes off and you're still dressed. The dark indigo wide-leg jeans hold the outfit together in either state, and the pink Sambas stop it from reading too plain. Shop the look. Good for a campus day or a long weekend walk. The cardigan sits happily in the 58 to 70°F range; once the sun is out, button it once and knot the hem at your waist so it looks deliberate.

When the forecast stays flat — a cool, overcast Saturday that never warms past 62°F — you don't need a removable layer at all, and this outfit leans into that. The oversized brown chunky knit is the layer, the grey drawstring wide-leg pants keep it relaxed, and the tan bag and white Nikes stop the brown-and-grey from going drab. See it here. If your afternoons are still hitting 72°F, skip this one for now; on a genuinely cold day, push the sleeves up and swap the sneakers for a loafer to take it from dog-walk to dinner with a friend.

Skirt Outfits for Warm September Afternoons

The trick to a skirt in September is letting the hemline do the temperature work: bare legs handle a warm afternoon while a knit up top covers the cool morning. Here that's a heather grey V-neck trimmed in pink over a grey pleated mini, with grey high-top Converse keeping it casual. Shop this outfit. Wear it to class or a casual lunch. Add opaque tights once mornings drop below 55°F, and if the afternoon spikes, the sweater comes off over a fitted tee without disturbing the skirt — the high-tops keep it reading like a student, not a brunch guest.

A matching knit set solves the September problem in one step: the soft-pink cropped cardigan and wide-leg knit pants read as one outfit, and the knotted mauve shoulder wrap is the only piece you actually shed when it warms up. Pink Nike P-6000s keep it from tipping into loungewear. See the look. Good for a relaxed brunch or a travel day. Knit sets like this hold up from about 60 to 72°F, and the wrap doubles as an airplane blanket or a seatback layer — knot it around the tote handle once you land so your hands stay free.

Pairing a brown leather bomber with a cream linen vest is what makes this a crossover outfit rather than a fall one: the linen keeps it summery, so when the bomber comes off around midday the look doesn't turn heavy. A taupe pleated mini and buckle ankle boots ground the brown layers. Shop the outfit. Wear it for a Sunday market and a coffee after. A light leather bomber works around 58 to 68°F; once the sun hits, carry it over one shoulder rather than tying it — leather doesn't knot cleanly — and the western ankle boots keep it grounded on cobblestones or a gravel lot.

September Date Night Outfits

For a September evening that starts warm and turns cool, a mini dress plus a jacket you can take off beats a heavier dress you're stuck in. The brown polka dot mini carries the warm part of the night; the oversized brown leather jacket and matching knee-high boots handle the walk home. See the full look. This is a drinks-then-dinner outfit for an evening that starts at 66°F and drops to 55°F. Book the outdoor table — the jacket has you covered until the low 50s, and the knee-high boots mean you don't need tights even when the temperature turns.

Floral Midi Dress & Shearling Jacket with Brown Boots — shop this look

This is the one look here that only works once September has actually turned. A burgundy floral slit midi dress keeps it soft, while the shearling-collar jacket and tall brown boots make it warm enough for a genuinely cool night — the shearling is right at 50°F in the evening but too much if your afternoon is still near 70°F. Shop this outfit. Save it for a dinner out. If the restaurant runs warm, the jacket comes straight off and the floral midi holds up on its own — the slit and the heeled boots do enough that you won't feel underdressed without the layer.

The through-line: pick your outfit around the layer you'll be holding at 2 p.m., not the one you need at 8 a.m. Once the afternoons stop warming up, most of these swap their light jacket for a real coat and carry straight into October.
