Don't pack away your summer dresses yet. Here's how to restyle sundresses for fall with tights, knits, jackets and boots that keep them wearable into October.

The dresses you wore all summer don't have to disappear the second the temperature drops. Restyling summer dresses for fall is mostly a matter of adding layers: tights, a knit over the top, a jacket, boots instead of sandals. This transition works for most sundresses, and it's covered in our broader guide to moving your summer wardrobe into fall. If the weather where you are is still mild, the early-fall light layering approach works too. Below are eight looks that show how it plays out with real dresses.

Add a Jacket Over the Dress

A burgundy floral midi is a summer dress on paper, but with a shearling-collar jacket and tall brown boots it reads as fall date-night. The slit and the floral print stay light while the jacket and boots do the warmth. Wear it to a dinner that starts before dark and ends after.

Keep the layers in one color family and a mini looks planned rather than thrown together. Here a brown polka dot mini gets an oversized brown leather jacket and matching knee-high boots. All-brown top to bottom does the work. Good for a coffee-then-walk kind of afternoon.

For a bolder version, a pink floral lace mini goes under a red leather bomber with red western boots. The red outerwear and boots pull the soft slip dress in a sharper direction. This is the one to wear when you want the dress to look intentional, not leftover from August.

Swap Sandals for Boots and Tights

A dark base is already halfway to fall, which makes this black floral mini dress the quickest one to move over. Add opaque black tights, swap the mules for ankle boots, and pull a cropped knit over the top. Done.

Add sheer or ivory tights and a denim jacket to this white floral mini with retro sneakers and it holds up on a cold morning; keep the sneakers on so it stays casual. On a warm early-fall day, skip the tights and wear it as it is. This is a school-run, errands, quick-lunch outfit.

Layer a Knit Over a Floral Midi

Pull a fine-gauge grey or cream sweater over the pink floral midi dress so only the skirt shows, then add boots. The dress reads as a skirt and nobody knows the difference. Its tonal pink styling still works if you keep the sweater soft rather than stark white.

The print on this cream red-floral midi dress already leans autumnal. Add a long-sleeve fitted tee underneath for warmth, trade the heeled mules for knee boots, and layer a trench on top. Right for a weekend where lunch turns into a long afternoon walk.

The Fall-First Version to Aim For

The black lace corset blazer dress with knee boots is the dressy end of the range because the layering is built into the dress itself: the blazer shoulders and lace corset panels give it structure a summer slip doesn't have, so tights and tall boots are all it needs to work for a night out. Treat it as the target when you're layering a lighter dress from scratch.

None of this needs new dresses. One jacket, a pack of black tights, ankle and knee boots, and a sweater you can pull over the top will keep most of your summer dresses in rotation into October.
